Those who are familiar with Bunker Mentality will not be surprised to see that the Nottingham, England label has dropped another fun and funky collection on us for Autumn/Winter 2016.
The brand has a knack for pushing the boundaries of golf fashion with bold designs and high-octane colors, and they make no apologies for it. Why should they? This is one of the few golf brands (if not the only brand) that can walk that fine line between bringing a colorful edge to the links while still respecting the traditions and etiquette of the game.
There is no better example of this than Bunker Mentality’s AW’16 Collection. While we’ve spent plenty of time chronicling the fact that golf apparel companies have been pulling inspiration from the Golden Era of the game, Bunker Mentality’s latest collection has strong ties to the Mod culture in the 1960s and 1980s. The bold paisleys, micro florals, daring dots, and vibrant vertical stripes that defined the Mod scene have been resurrected by the brand and showcased in its line of polos for the season. The shirts are also finished with more Mod inspired details like extended plackets, streamlined fits, and short button-down collars.
Of course, a stylish golf shirt would be nothing if it didn’t possess performance qualities and that is where Bunker Mentality’s Cmax fabric comes into play. The lightweight, quick-dry polyester pique helps to wick moisture away from the skin and regulate body temperature. The weave on the technical fabric also enhances air circulation and breathability. Between the performance and the style of the brand’s polos, you’ll be looking and feeling cool and comfortable on the course this fall.
While you can’t go wrong with any of the bold polos in Bunker Mentality’s lineup, we’ve selected four must-haves for you.
Cmax Big Spot Polo
Bunker Mentality calls the Big Spot “one of the coolest polos we’ve ever created,” and it is difficult to disagree with that statement. Small pin dot prints have been popular designs on the fairways and on the streets the last couple of years, but we haven’t seen any as big and brash as the large polka dots on the Big Spot. Sure, the wide 5-button placket and button-down collar feed into the Mod vibe of the collection, but those bold dots bring a bit of a 70’s disco funk to the design, too. At a time when all over prints are trending, you won’t find a more unique option than this. Plus, you can never go wrong with blue on blue.
Cmax Floral Polo
Speaking of trends, floral prints have been one of the hottest crazes. We first saw them on the fashion runways, and then, Ryo Ishikawa brought them to the course a few years ago. Since then, several golf apparel brands have worked floral prints into their collections, and Bunker Mentality’s Floral Polo is one of the best ones out there.
Many of the florals on the fairways are big, bold, and in your face, but the tonal print on the Floral Polo is slightly more understated and offers an air of sophistication. The pops of white petals and yellow leaves bring personality to the shirt and prevent it from being just another wallflower in the pro shop.
For an added touch of authenticity, Bunker Mentality reached into the vault and used a unique pattern from a 1960’s golf shirt for the self-fabric collar, which the brand says will not lose its shape over time. Feeding into the 60’s style are ribbed cuffs, a chest pocket, and a 6-button placket (yes, six buttons). The vertical silicone logo on the pocket helps to connect this vintage design with modern day technical details.
Cmax Vertical Stripe Polo
Polos with wide vertical stripes were popular designs in the 1980’s mod culture, and Bunker Mentality has modernized this vintage look with the Vertical Stripe Polo. The alternating navy blue, hot pink and light blue stripes create a bold aesthetic that is sure to turn heads on the first tee.
As with the other polos we’ve discussed, Bunker Mentality nailed the retro details on the Vertical Stripe Polo with a long five-button placket, neat collar, and slim silhouette. Contemporary touches, like the silicone chest badge and color coordinating trim around the inside of the collar, bring this 80’s inspired look up to date.
Cmax T Blast Polo
Using golf equipment as design elements has a tendency to come off as being contrived and kitschy at times, but that is not the case with Bunker Mentality’s T Blast Polo. The microprint with an angled tee motif is tastefully done and creates a cool, subtle texture on the front of the shirt.
When dealing with prints and colors, it is always important to keep everything in balance. The design of the T Blast does just that with the navy blue placket, collar, sleeves and back. Again, the small details tie everything together. Notice how matching the hot pink tipping on the sleeves and collar with the random tees in the print elevate the entire look of the shirt.
In addition to these bold and stylish polos, Bunker Mentality just launched a complementary range of outerwear for the season. The asymmetric color blocking on the Enduro ¼ Zip Pullover makes a strong statement while offering a sporty look. This mid-layer jacket constructed from a three-layer bonded fleece fabric can be worn as an outer layer on warmer days or layered under another jacket in cooler weather.
Joining the Enduro in the collection are three full-zip jackets. Puffer jackets have been a strong trend lately and the wind resistant Samnite and Norton jackets play into this. Both feature a quilted channel design on the front for warmth and technical polyester on the sleeves and back for range of motion. The Samnite shares a fresh graphical print with the Jameston, but the latter adds the element of water resistant fabric to handle light showers.
