2021 U.S. Open Apparel Scripts

Who is wearing what at Torrey Pines

Every Major Championship has a theme these days. The Masters is all about azaleas. This year’s PGA Championship at Kiawah leaned heavily into seersucker accents and low-country coastal hues. Now, the golf world heads west for the U.S. Open where Torrey pine trees, paragliders, and dusty pastels of left coast sunsets provide the inspiration. There is also a story to be told around the color green as more apparel brands work recycled fabrics into their collections.

Here is a look at the apparel and footwear selections for some of the game’s top players at the U.S. Open. Scripts are listed in order of world ranking. Dustin Johnson has the tee.

Dustin Johnson (Adidas Golf)

Adidas continues to be one of the brands leading the sustainability charge. The story for Adidas at Torrey Pines isn’t a color, print, or design. Instead, it is about the fabric. DJ will slip on pieces made with 100% recycled polyester, which is made in part with Parley Ocean Plastic.

Xander Schauffele (Adidas Golf)

Like DJ, Xander will wear sustainable polos from the Three-Stripes brand’s PRIMEBLUE Collection. From a style standpoint, I’m most excited about those black Pin Roll Pants. The rolled hems are a cool alternative to joggers and the carrot-shaped legs are on point.

Brooks Koepka (Nike)

It’s fashion, bro! Brooks Koepka releasing his U.S. Open apparel script the same way the rest of us release our club championship script is so Brooks Koepka. The camo-esque print was inspired by the Torrey pine tree.

Favorite fit: Saturday

Viktor Hovland (J.Lindeberg)

Athletic and modern looks for Hovland. This Thyme green color has been a standout for JL this spring. Track-striped pant on Sunday is one to add to your rotation.

Favorite fit: Friday

Tony Finau (Nike)

Finau apparently went to the same DIY apparel scripting class as Koepka. Tony’s Nike Polo follows the sustainability trend. It was made with 100% sustainable materials, using a blend of recycled polyester and organic fibers. Those white and purple Air Zoom Victory Tour 2s are sick.

Favorite fit: Sunday

Billy Horschel (Ralph Lauren)

It wouldn’t be the U.S. Open without some All-American preppy looks from Billy Horschel and Ralph Lauren. Nautical prints and stripes are perfect fits for ocean-side rounds in the summer.

Favorite fit: Thursday

Harris English (Peter Millar)

The calendar says June, but Peter Millar is using Torrey Pines’ spectacular coastline as the backdrop for a sneak peek at early arrivals in its Fall Collection. Thursday’s Sail Performance Jersey Polo features a distinct ombre camo design. In the case of June Gloom, Harris may opt for the Excursionist Flex Popover Hoodie, crafted from a luxurious Merino wool with a hint of stretch.

Favorite fit: Friday

Lee Westwood (Peter Millar)

The Primrose Pink will certainly complement those West Coast sunsets. Like English, Westy may layer up with the lightweight Excursionist Flex Popover Hoodie. The eb66 5-pocket pants create a modern, yet classic look throughout the week. I just hope that Lee leaves the white belt at home.

Favorite fit: Friday

Cameron Smith (Original Penguin)

Teal and navy accents complement the Pacific Ocean’s crisp blue waters before Cam finishes the tourney in his signature red. The mix of vibrant stripes, solids, and whimsical prints is stylish and fun for summer. Polos are crafted with 30% recycled polyester.

Favorite fit: Saturday

Will Zalatoris (FootJoy)

Zalatoris starts the championship in a souvenir print polo inspired by vintage state roadmaps from the ’30s and ’40s. The all-over print features the iconic sights of Torrey Pines, including paragliders, trees, highway signs, and the California state flag. The palette of dusty pastels complements the colors of the California coast. Look for Will to complete his looks every day with all-white versions of FJ’s Packard shoe–a modern interpretation of the classic saddle.

Favorite fit: Thursday

Garrick Higgo (Macade)

A few weeks ago we told you Macade was an emerging brand to watch this summer. Little did we know Garrick Higgo would put Macade’s modern and athletic fits front and center during his win at the Palmetto Championship. Grounded in neutrals, the pops of teal give this script energy. Joggers on Thursday and Sunday add to the sporty aesthetic.

Favorite fit: Thursday

Max Homa (FootJoy)

Like Zalatoris, Homa’s fits were inspired by Cali’s coast and Torrey Pines. Twice, Max will turn to a vintage Torrey Pine print polo and will lace up the new brogue-style Tarlow shoe throughout the week.

Favorite fit: Thursday

Marc Leishman (Kjus)

From the cool morning marine layer to the baking afternoon sun, Leishman will be ready for a variety of conditions with highly technical apparel that focuses on temperature regulation. His pullovers and jackets will provide lightweight warmth and four-way stretch for mobility during the swing.

Favorite fit: Thursday

Christiaan Bezuidenhout (Fairway & Greene; Zero Restriction)

If you are looking for a U.S. Open connection, all of C-Bez’s polos are made here in the good ol’ U.S. of A. Subtle prints and textures are the name of the game. Friday’s dot print provides a touch of texture but wears like a solid. Saturday’s wavey micro-print is a strong option for a Father’s Day gift.

Favorite fit: Saturday

Kevin Kisner (Peter Millar)

Ralston Performance Flannel Trouser on Thursday provides the texture and appearance of a classic flannel trouser with the addition of stretch, moisture-wicking, and shape retention. Kiz will pair it with a great-fitting polo from Peter Millar’s Tailored Fit Crown Crafted Collection.

Favorite fit: Thursday

Lanto Griffin (Galvin Green)

A mix of bold prints and basic solids. Pintuck trousers give the appearance of a single pleat and add interest to the flat-front design.

Favorite fit: Saturday

Branden Grace (Kjus)

Warm jackets and mid-layers are key for cool, oceanside conditions. The Kjus’ Soren Polo is perfect for any weather and pairs nicely with the Ike Pants for a classic golf outfit that is ready to perform in a number of conditions.

Favorite fit: Thursday

Matt Wallace (J.Lindberg)

Crisp whites and fresh greens. I’m still a sucker for a JL bridge logo across the back of a polo. Iconic!

Favorite fit: Thursday

Zach Johnson (Kjus)

La Jolla’s cool ocean breezes will be no match for the insulated jackets in Zach’s wardrobe. They will pack in the heat without packing on the bulk. As temps rise throughout the day, the breathable polos and stretchable pants are primed for warmer conditions. Sunday’s orange Soren Polo will pop against the grayish-blue skies.

Favorite fit: Thursday

Cameron Young (Peter Millar)

The showstopper here is the Stealth Performance Quarter-Zip in the vivid Agave shade. Saturday sees Young in a sleek and modern take on a classic golf outfit. The tri-color stripe of the Stella Performance Jersey Polo comes together with the classic Kirk Performance Five-Pocket Pant in navy. Completing the look is the all-new Crown Crafted Ribbon O-Ring, which features tonal rubberized enamel rings.
