Taylor Made Adidas Golf has a knack for creating a buzz. Even during a week like the Masters, the brand has risen above all the noise and made a stir in the social media world with their all for one, one for all apparel scripting for the Masters. As other brands have been busy creating unique apparel scripts for each of their players, Adidas has scripted one shirt for each of the four days that will be worn by all their players. Some may call this streamlining the apparel scripting process. Others may call it sheer laziness, but from a branding standpoint it is pure genius.
Adidas has been using this team scripting concept throughout the 2013 season. First at Riviera with R1 team apparel for the launch of the Taylor Made R1 driver and then during the World Golf Championships at Trump Doral with RocketBallz-IER team apparel for the launch of the Taylor Made RBZ Stage 2 line of fairway woods.
The Masters team script features four colorways black/island (green), chrome/white, white/black and white/island. Each shirt features the same bold color block design across the chest and shoulder along with the Adidas logo on the right chest and three stripes on the back of the left sleeve. In addition to the shirts, Adidas has produced a limited edition version of the Adizero shoe in a white/island colorway. Look for Adidas players such as Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson and Jason Day to be sporting the Masters collection shirts and limited edition Adizero shoes.
Many brands have tried and failed with the team uniform concept (see Ryder Cup and President Cup teams), but Adidas seems to have achieved the rare albatross in golf style–a good looking team uniform.
The Adidas 2013 Masters apparel script is available at www.adidasgolf.com.
Updated: It’s unclear whether 36-hole Masters leader Jason Day was confused, forgot what day it was or just wanted to be the rogue agent, but he wore Saturday’s white/black shirt on Friday rather than the scripted chrome/white version. The horror!!! Based on his surge to the top of the leaderboard and the stumbles experienced by Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson on Friday, we may see the Spaniard and the American follow the Aussie’s example and break the script on Saturday. Stay tuned!
