This Week In Golf Fashion: Brobdingnagian edition

There are big fits and then there are Brobdingnagian fits. We look back at the sartorial giants, massive camos, big bridges, pink whales, and more from the deserts of La Quinta and Abu Dhabi.

The American Express

James Hart du Preez made his PGA Tour debut at The American Express and the South African has gained as much attention for his massive size (6’9″ 260 lbs.) as his prodigious drives (he averaged 373 yards on the Sunshine Tour last year). James gets two thumbs up from me for choosing the TravisMathew SOCKEYE polo. The subtle tonal camo print on the chest stripe paired with grey trousers and belt was the perfect kit for this Brobdingnagian golfer.

Warning: New brand alert and Hot Stove action! Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson partnered with former Callaway Golf executive, Harry Arnett to create MUNICIPAL. Their goal was to create Sport Utility Gear that can do anything and go anywhere; including the golf course! Wyndham Clark is no longer wearing behemoth Nike and gives us a glimpse of the Municipal golf capsule that will release in mid-March.

In other Hot Stove action, Kurt Kitayama will be wearing luxury golf brand Chervo this season. The classic design of Chervo is a mammoth investment but it will wear for years to come.

Will Zalatoris (FootJoy)

Will Zalatoris is quietly one of the sartorial giants on Tour. He consistently looks great with very little fanfare. Well…..I am about to change that! Be prepared for plenty of accolades this season. FootJoy continues to quietly drop killer limited edition collections like the Sea Change. The inside of Will’s collar and placket incorporates the design from the signature piece from this collection, the Sea Change Hoodie.

Lee Hodges (Vineyard Vines & FootJoy)

There is something about the Vineyard Vines pink whale that makes me obnoxiously happy. Lee Hodges should be obnoxiously happy with his T3 finish at La Quinta. I LOVE EVERYTHING…….about this fit: the polo, belt, trousers, and custom Premiere Series Tarlow FootJoy shoes.

I tried and failed to get a pair of these Nike Air Jordan 1s. The Wolf Grey version is sick! If I miss out on the upcoming release of the “Chicago” colorway, I may have to venture to the secondary market and pay an enormous sum (GULP)!

Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

Here is another signature shoe that I am equally excited about, the ECCO BIOM H4 Iceman edition. Ironically, Henrik’s sweater matches Erik van Rooyen’s model of the BIOM H4 perfectly!

Speaking of EVR…..the Greyson Rumson jogger and Camo Wolf sweater? YOWZA!

Thomas Pieters (Nike Golf)

When I first saw this picture I thought, “Oh, NO! Say it ain’t so!! Backwards baseball cap on the course?” No worries, it was just mighty windy out there. Most guys ditched their hats altogether…

….except for Tommy Fleetwood. The lesson here is that “dad hats” are impervious to the wind. Tommy’s vintage washed lid celebrates fifty years of Nike and has “1972” embroidered on the back. Available in April.

I am a sucker for the JL bridge across the upper back. It creates the illusion of huge shoulders. Sign me up for that.

  1. Spend more time in the gym and you won’t need a giant L logo across your back! You’ll look better and you’ll look better!

    1. Hi Larry,
I do my best. As I am getting older I am finding it harder and harder to keep the shape I want despite 5-6 days per week in the gym. I will take any help I can get from the apparel I wear! Happy New Years, my friend.

      1. I feel your pain. I can only manage 3 days a week in the gym now and even that’s a challenge. On the other hand, i’m not a fan of the Big L logo (in case you couldn’t tell!) although i’m a big fan of JL style in general. Happy New Year and let’s try harder to make golf happen this year. Beer too!

  2. Hi Ren,
The Vineyard Vines logo on Tour is much larger than you will find on their retail polos. You are correct, this is done for brand awareness on TV. Thanks for reading and commenting.

  3. Mike, i agree, love the JL on the back. Its a cool look and does make the shoulder look bigger. You are really getting custom on these writeups and wow is it a fun read. Keep it up!
