You heard it here first. Billy Horschel will be the best-dressed player at the 116th U.S. Open. His combination of bold, well-balanced looks, razor-sharp fits, and killer FootJoy Shield Tip kicks will place him atop the sartorial leaderboard by week’s end. This should come as no surprise. Horschel frequently finds himself on our best-dressed lists, and we even gave his U.S. Open apparel script from Ralph Lauren the proverbial mic drop on Twitter when it was released last week.
Horschel, like any good brand ambassador, gave all credit to the creative minds at Ralph Lauren. This begs the question. Who should get credit for making Tour players look like they just stepped out of a fashion magazine? The brand, or the player? One thing is for sure, the Horschel/Ralph Lauren partnership is the most stylish one in the game of golf today.
Here’s a daily breakdown of Horschel’s looks for the U.S. Open.
Day 1
Horschel starts the tournament in bold fashion. The commemorative U.S. Open polo features red, navy, sapphire, and white run-on stripes. A commemorative patch, with the iconic Oakmont squirrel, stars and stripes on the left chest, is a nod to the rich history of Oakmont and a celebration of golf’s return to the Olympics this summer.
Typically, wearing a dark colored belt with white trousers is a no-go, but in this case, the sapphire blue strap is absolutely the right choice. It looks like it is simply an extension of the shirt and it creates a smooth transition from top to bottom. Knowing when to break the rules is just as important as knowing when to follow them.
Day 2
Big, bold floral prints are trending this summer, and you will not find any more daring than the one Horschel will be wearing on Friday. The key to pulling off loud patterns like this is to keep the rest of the kit quiet, and that is exactly what Billy will do with the solid white polo.
Horschel has a penchant for rockin’ crazy, yet sophisticated pants at major championships dating back to those famous octopus trousers in 2013. This colorful Virginia Floral Print is just the latest pair that will have social media buzzing.
BTW, Ralph Lauren makes a shorts version of these pants, which is a better option for amateurs this summer.
Day 3
Horschel keeps the bold looks coming on Saturday. This energetic color blocked polo is perfect for sparking a Moving Day run up the leaderboard. Not that it needs any help standing out from the crowd, but pairing this shirt with clean white pants makes the colors pop even more.
Day 4
Pink gingham is one of those classic American preppy patterns, making it perfect for the final round of the U.S. Open. This is one smooth and elegant look for Horschel. Again, pairing a solid colored polo with patterned pants is the right move, and you can never go wrong with wearing navy and pink together.
