Crusader: Bubba Watson Is Rockin’ High-Tops from G/FORE at the U.S. Open

You can go ahead and add Bubba Watson to the list of high-top golf shoe converts. Not to be outdone by his best bud, Rickie Fowler, Bubba laced up G/FORE‘s new Crusader high-top in a white, red, and black colorway during Tuesday’s U.S. Open practice round. So, will we see Bubba strolling the fairways in his new kicks during competitive rounds at Oakmont? Who knows, but I’m willing to bet my winnings from last week’s $10 nassau on it.

GolfThreads first gave you the heads up on G/FORE entering the high-top game at the PGA Merchandise Show back in January. Since then, Watson has worked with Mossimo Giannulli’s team at G/FORE on design tweaks that have resulted in the final product that we saw at Oakmont.

One look at the Crusader and it is difficult not to have flashbacks to those old school Nike Air Jordans, Air Force 1s, or Dunks. The rounded toe design and perforations in the upper in forefoot take us back to those days of shooting hoops on the playgrounds in junior high.

In typical G/FORE style, Giannulli has given the Crusader high fashion appeal through the use of color blocking and a quilted upper. These quilted uppers have been a huge trend in streetwear over the past few years, appearing on everything from Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars to sneakers from up-market labels like Balmain, Del Toro, and Alexander McQueen.

From a tech standpoint, here’s what we know about Bubba’s new kicks.

  • Waterproofing agents are applied during the leather tanning process to keep the feet dry in wet conditions.
  • A two-part, super lightweight EVA sole is used for traction and support.
  • A padded interior with a lightweight, anti-microbial cotton mesh lining enhances comfort and breathability.
  • A Triple-density, foam cushion Ortholite sock liner with 3-part construction provides comfort and support.
  • In addition to the white, red, and black colorway, G/FORE will introduce a black and white colorway, which features an exotic skin print instead of the quilting.

Bubba’s recent partnership with G/FORE has taken his style quotient to new levels. He is the perfect fit for the brand’s bold takes on classic styles. There is no doubt that he has the swagger to rock the Crusader, however, we’d like to make a few wardrobe suggestions to the two-time Masters Champion.

When wearing high-tops, choose a pant that is very tapered through the ankle. Heck, you can even go with the ‘stacked’ look that is popular in streetwear these days. This means that you need to get rid of that 2″ inch slit in the bottom of your trousers, which you should get rid of anyway, and tailor those britches a few inches shorter. If you are going to wear a pair of bold high-tops, at least let us see them. If you don’t believe us, check out this timely article from GQ.

If you are looking to pick up a pair of the Crusaders, set a reminder for this Friday. G/FORE will be accepting pre-orders for Bubba’s shoes starting then, and they are expected to begin shipping in mid-July. The Snow colorway (white, red, and black) will retail for $225 while the Onyx (black and white) will be $250. G/FORE is also doing a Crusader giveaway. You can enter here.
