Dustin Johnson has signed a deal with New Era to wear the brand’s caps on the course.
This ends weeks of speculation about Johnson’s endorsement deals for 2016, as his contract with Taylor Made adidas Golf was reportedly up at the end of 2015. DJ fueled the flames by announcing via social media that he had a new sponsorship deal with a “lifestyle” brand. This sent the interwebs into a tizzy as the Internet-forum-know-it-alls claimed to have had ‘inside’ info that the 9-time PGA Tour winner would be wearing a swoosh, a big cat or even Lululemon in 2016. (Paulina wears yoga pants, so DJ will obviously be wearing Lululemon. Lol!)
In hindsight all of this speculation was unfounded, but it provided interesting fodder and entertainment over the holidays for the news-starved golf community. New Era is indeed a lifestyle brand, but lifestyle is a broad category that includes, but is not limited, to apparel. Cleverly played, DJ.
The only news here is that there is no real news at all. Dustin Johnson has been wearing New Era caps for some time. New Era has also collaborated with Taylor Made over the last couple of years on headwear, including some of the retro lids that dropped last year. This agreement just creates an official relationship between player and brand, meaning there is some level of compensation for DJ.
Johnson will continue to tee it up with Taylor Made clubs, wear Adidas apparel, and lace up Adidas shoes. Word is that DJ is a big fan of adidas golf’s new TOUR360 BOOST kicks (especially the White/EQTBlue/ShockBlue colorway) and adidas’ Ultra Boost Running shoes, which he even wore during a competitive round at the Hero World Challenge after slicing up his foot.
