It is difficult to believe this year’s PGA Tour season is coming to a close. Only three tournaments remain before one golfer etches his name into the history books. Will DJ or J-Day finally win the FedEx Cup or we will see a multiple-time winner like Jordan or Rory? If The Northern Trust is any indication, we are in for a roller coaster ride.

Over the next two weeks, we are taking a unique look at the fashion stars and duds of the Tour. This week focuses on the 30-year olds at The Northern Trust. Next week, we will turn our attention to what the Millenials are wearing at the Dell Technologies Championship.
GolfThreads contributor Ian Galbraith takes a look back at the fashion choices for the thirtysomethings at The Northern Trust.
Dustin Johnson (Adidas) 33-Years Old
I admire Dustin for finding a look that works for him. He consistently rocks dark monochromatic kits and usually turns to cool, calming blues on Sundays. Every week he is able to keep his outfits looking fresh with subtle changes. This week, his shirt wore like a solid at a distance, but up close, the subtle tonal stripes added a level of interest to his look. Take a page out of DJ’s book. Wear various shades of colors that fall in your comfort zone and don’t be afraid to mix in tonal patterns and stripes for depth.
Dustin also sports beautiful House of Fleming belts, but you don’t need to spend north of $500 to mirror DJ’s luxurious straps. Instead, find some leather belts with exotic textures to complement your outfits.
Bubba Watson (Oakley) 38-Years Old
Bubba’s style is consistent, to say the least. As you can see from the 2014 picture (top), he looks exactly the same as he does today (bottom). He still closes the top button on his brightly colored and aggressively patterned Oakley polos and he wears the same shapeless pants. Sure, finding a brand you like allows you to mix and match looks, but your style should evolve with the times. As Bob Dylan so eloquently wrote in the early 1960’s, “For the times they are a-changin’.” Unfortunately, Bubba’s wardrobe isn’t changing at all.
Justin Rose (adiPure by Adidas) 37-Years Old
Another player with a consistent style game is Justin Rose. Since moving to Adidas Golf’s adiPure line, Justin’s clothes have been perfectly tailored to fit his tall frame. Thankfully, he is never going to wear skin-tight shirts or bold patterns. Much like his drives, his apparel choices don’t stray far from the middle of the fairways. His go-to look has been a brightly colored polo with a pair of solid colored pants; a look many amateur golfers can easily replicate.
Charles Howell III (Dunning) 38-Years Old
The Augusta, Georgia native is finishing his 17th year as a professional and he has quietly been one of the best dressed players throughout his career. Like many golfers on this list, CH3 dresses appropriately for his age. Week in and week out, he stays with what works best for him, and the team at Dunning has done a great job creating clean, well-tailored looks that complement his build. Follow Howell’s lead and wear clothes on the course that fit your personality and make you feel good. There really is something to the saying of, “Look good. Feel good. Play great.”

Keegan Bradley (TravisMathew) 31-Years Old
For some reason, I silently cheer for Keegan. Maybe it is the fact that he won the PGA Championship in his rookie year or his impressive bounce back this season after a poor 2016. Or, maybe it is the goofy look he has while playing golf in high-tops. For the longest time, I thought Keegs was clowning us by wearing those Jordan high-tops, however, he seems fully invested in the look. I have to give him respect for finding a style and sticking with it, but the J’s look clunky most of the time.
Jhonattan Vegas (Nike Golf) 33-Years Old
After Sunday’s round, Vegas holds the 10th spot in the FedEx Cup standings and is surprisingly the second highest ranked member of Team Swoosh. Jhonattan’s style has been impressive, especially since he moved away from the blade collars and towards more traditional looks. He continues to utilize a wide selection of pieces from Nike’s catalog and the result has been an impressive range of modern and athletic looks. His best look of the week was this simple white and sapphire blue kit. It showcased why subtle details and perfect fits can elevate even the most basic of setups.

Kevin Na (WAAC) 33-Years Old
No list of thirtysomething golfers would be complete without Kevin Na. Even if he has struggled with his golf game in 2017, Na has stepped up his style game big time. The team at WAAC Golf always keeps his looks fresh and his clothes fit perfectly. This week, his outfits were pretty tame and void of trippy, magic eye patterns. Kevin gets a bad rap for wearing outlandish clothes, but he actually uses vibrant colors and patterns sparingly. I say embrace this guilty pleasure by going bold and have fun with your apparel. There is a little fashion devil inside all of us. Kevin’s just happens to be on his shirt for everybody to see.
Further thoughts on Bubba’s look being not unlike that of 2014. Wearing a full spectrum of golf gloves from G Fore, as well as their shoes with colorful sole edges is an upgrade-dont you think? Being the the first major player to play with color golf balls from Volvik adds an additional bit of seasoning.
I am not a fan of black pants and white shoes. Too much contrast. I laugh that Kuch wasn’t even listed on this because his apparel is so bad. Ha. What about Sergio?
Trust me. If we could have found an image of Kuch in those khaki/grey shoes, he would have been on the list. Ian had a rant ready to go. Agree that there is too much contrast between white shoes and black pants. I have seen DJ and Stenson pull it off from time to time. I’m pretty much a white shoe guy, except when wearing black pants. — Greg
