Was Bubba’s Masters-Winning Shirt a Blast from the Past?

As I watched Bubba Watson make his way around Augusta National to capture his second green jacket, I couldn’t help but think that his Oakley Delta shirt had a bit of an 80s flair to it. Remember all those graphic polos from that era? Remember when steel blue was all the rage?

For some reason, the Nike shirt that Robert Gamez wore in his dramatic win at Bay Hill in 1990 popped into mind. (OK, it wasn’t the 80s, but it was close). This wasn’t just any win. It was one of the most memorable in PGA TOUR history. Gamez holed out for eagle on the 72nd hole to steal the victory from the Shark and Larry Mize. This was another in a long list of bitter defeats for Norman. We won’t even get into what Mize did to Norman at the Masters in 1987.

For those of you who don’t remember Gamez’s dramatic hole out or his Nike graphic polo, check out the video above.

Tell me what you think? Are there some similarities to Bubba’s Masters-winning shirt?

Either way, let’s just hope 90s golf fashions don’t make a comeback. That would be enough to send GolfThreads into retirement.
