This Week in Golf Fashion: The Wicked Awesome Edition

Fashion Recap of the BMW Championship

Fellow New Englander Keegan Bradley very fittingly won the BMW Championship on Monday after a day-long delay for inclement weather (anyone from New England can appreciate golfing in the elements). When he made his putt to beat Justin Rose I was “wicked” excited. In fact, I thought to myself, “ayuh, this is sweeter than pure Vermont maple syrup”. Us hearty New Englanders stick together (fun fact, he and I have each lived in three different New England states).

Keegan has long been a favorite of mine, mainly because of his time in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. But also because he reps TravisMathew and Air Jordans! Any guy from the Northeast who makes it to the PGA Tour and then signs a deal with the iconic California golf clothing label and the GOAT sneaker brand deserves some love from GolfThreads.

The weather on Monday brought out some fantastic layering pieces. Keegan showed up in a classic; TravisMathew’s Stone V-Neck Sweater. The embroidered detailing on the chest of this sweater makes it stand out from your run of the mill v-neck. Kind of like ordering an ice cream with “jimmies”–it is just better! So delicious with the good stuff on top. Both the sweater and an ice cream with “jimmies” (aka sprinkles).

Billy Horschel always knows how to steal the show, regardless of the weather. The Cool Wool Jacket by RLX Ralph Lauren is a great piece of outerwear from the AW ’18 lineup. If you live in Maine or Vermont you can wear this jacket ten months out of the year! RLX makes a cardigan version of this jacket too, so if you live further south, say Massachusetts, the cardigan may be a better purchase. Check them both out and order appropriately!

Not to be outdone by his Ralph Lauren counterpart, Justin Thomas showed off some sharp Polo Golf sweaters, with and without sleeves. Both are versatile pullovers that will make you look sharp wherever and whenever you wear them. Speaking of Ralph Lauren, be on the lookout for our upcoming Ryder Cup uniform coverage.

Beatnik Golf Style?!

On Saturday Keegan Bradley embraced a “beatnik” golf style, with his all-black getup and the custom Jordans. In fact, he wore one of my favorite shirts of the tournament; the YOU GOT 5 Polo by TravisMathew. No one names their polos better than TM. They have made it an art. Another fun fact, the Beatnik pioneer, Jack Kerouac was born in Massachusetts and despite his travels and being “On The Road” he always considered himself a New Englander at heart!

Since we are discussing fashion trends of the mid-1950’s and 60’s it seems appropriate to give another shout out to Original Penguin Golf Collection and their retro-hipster vibe. Cameron Smith wore the Geo Printed Golf Polo on Thursday and wore it well. Even better is that he paired this perfect-fitting polo with the very stylish and popular Titleist rope hat. If you haven’t read my recent Original Penguin review, you may want to do so. You will learn about the pillars of golf fashion and the brand that brought you the classic golf polo in 1955.

On Second Thought….

At first glance, I didn’t like the shirt, belt, pants combination that Adam Scott wore on Friday. Originally I thought maybe the pattern on the blue shirt was too much for the textured earth-toned web belt. However, upon closer inspection, I think he pulled it off brilliantly and it made quite a nice transition to his light-blue colored trousers.

We saw Tiger and Phil soften it up a bit and go with some spring-like pastels at Aronimink Golf Club. I did not like or dislike either look, but change is always good so I will give them each a thumbs up.

There is never a good time to wear yellow! Unless of course you are visiting Downeast Maine in the spring and wearing a yellow raincoat. That is permissible. It is also acceptable, and CLASSY to ditch your scripted blue polo in favor of a yellow one, like Rickie Fowler did, to honor a mate. R.I.P. Jarrod Lyle.

  1. Rickie’s shirt yellow and shoe yellow weren’t the same shade, right? Phil and Tiger look boxy with large fits. I don’t know what it is about Adam’s kit but I like the fit and unique look and then I don’t. Its actually great because it makes you think.
