This will be a bit different from most of the reviews you read here at GolfThreads. I won’t be spending a lot of time on color palettes, collar and placket sizes and design aesthetics. Simply focusing on those aspects of 2nd Guy Golf’s apparel diminishes what the company is all about — and that is helping people.
2nd Guy Golf was founded by former Major League Baseball pitcher, Russ Ortiz, and his business partner, LJ Richardson. As a San Francisco Giants fan, I still have fond memories of Russ on the mound in the late 90s and early 00s. Those were some great Giants teams, but I digress.
Once Russ’ playing days were over, he combined two of his passions — golf and charity work — and formed 2nd Guy Golf. Through the sale of golf shirts, hats and accessories, 2nd Guy Golf is helping to end world hunger. All proceeds from the sale of men’s products go to Feed My Starving Children, an organization that hand-packs meals for starving children in over 70 countries.
For this review, I received the Performance shirt from 2nd Guy Golf in white with multiple black and orange stripes (Giants colors!) around the mid-section. This shirt is also available in a bright red/black/white colorway and a second version of the Performance shirt features black stripes around the sleeves of an otherwise solid lime green or neon yellow shirt. True to its name, the stand out quality for this shirt is performance. The material does a great job of moving perspiration away from the body for comfort throughout the round — not surprising for a shirt from an organization based in the Arizona desert.
2nd Guy Golf offers a second style of shirt called the Classic shirt (in light blue or white), which features two wide black stripes that run to the right of the placket. Both styles feature very traditional three-button plackets, self-collars and are constructed of a highly technical, moisture-wicking and anit-microbial fabric, which means your golf game will be the only thing causing a stench on the course.
From a fit standpoint, consider sizing down when ordering from 2nd Guy Golf. The shirts offer a fuller, more traditional fit with wider shoulders and longer sleeves than brands you typically see profiled here on GolfThreads
In addition to shirts, 2nd Guy Golf also offers multiple styles of hats to complement the shirts. The 12 Stripe Mesh Fitted hat includes a similar striped design to the Performance shirt, while the 2 Stripe Adjustable hat features similar detailing to the Classic shirt.
While 2nd Guy Golf won’t be confused with the trend setting styles and cuts from J.Lindeberg, I applaud 2nd Guy Golf for tackling a problem that is far too prevalent in the world today — and doing it through golf apparel. The golf industry and the PGA Tour have always done a great job of giving back, but I don’t know of any other golf apparel companies that exist for the sole reason of helping others (TOMS and its One for One program is the only lifestyle company that comes to mind).
