Masters Fashion Dimes & Crimes: Day 1

Tiger’s Thurs Day Pink, EVR’s tribute to a different Georgia city, Willett goes TRENDY, J-Day’s pantaloons, Sergio auditions for Elf 2, and more. Tour Editor Michael Ruuska breaks down the best and worst looks from Day 1 at the Masters.

If you drive two and a half hours southeast of Augusta, Georgia you will hit Savannah, the “Hostess City of the South”. The botanical motifs on the Greyson Forever Alive Polo are inspired by Savannah. I’d say that this polo is the hostess with the mostest.

Jake Knapp (Original Penguin & Nike Golf)

Cleary, the first group to tee off on Thursday set the tone for Dimes. EVR’s playing partner, Jake Knapp looked pretty dang good too. Can you be sophisticated and badass at the same time? (Hint: the answer is “yes”).

Austin Eckroat (Michael Kors & FootJoy)

I am on record as not being a fan of zipper plackets. Michael Kors is changing my mind. This one worked. I was also particularly fond of Austin Eckroat’s belt; the blue center stripe pulled this entire kit together.

Wyndham Clark (Municipal & FootJoy)

I understand that golf apparel is following the fashion trends and moving towards a more generous cut. However, my preference is still this. Wydham’s fit is always on point. (Did you know that he wears Greyson Montauk trousers with his Municipal tops?).

Kurt Kitayama (Municipal & Boxto)

Kurt’s subtle camo print stood out against the off-white mysterious slacks. Anyone know what brand these fly pants are? They have a 90’s utilitarian vibe with the oversized zipper back pockets.

Dustin Johnson (Extracurricular & FootJoy)

God, have I missed Dustin Johnson. Name a golfer who has more swagger than DJ? (I will wait). While I am waiting, I will admire the eye-catching Georgia Green Cloak Polo. It just looked so cool against the backdrop of Augusta National.

Rickie Fowler (Puma Golf)

Alliteration: the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words. Rickie’s Puma pique polo popped against the pink and purple azaleas perfectly.

Danny Willett (TrendyGolf)

Breaking news, Danny Willett is now going to be outfitted by TrendyGolf. Sit back and enjoy, because this is going to be GOOD! They are off to a great start. A navy-blue monochromatic kit with a long-sleeved polo makes a statement. I am paying attention! And you should too.

Tony Finau (Nike Golf)

Tony Finau’s Nike polo reminds me of a Bob Ross skyline. I like that it makes me think of something other than golf.

Max Homa (FootJoy)

Max is such a great ambassador for FootJoy (and golf). I appreciate the personality he brings to the PGA Tour and his understated style. I am giving him the shoutout he (and FootJoy) deserves.

Justin Thomas (Greyson Clothiers & FootJoy)

Brilliant and breathtaking, the Garden of Wolves Polo stole the show. Zoom in or click on the link to appreciate the beauty. The shades of green, white and pink pay homage to the botanical heritage of Augusta while providing a darker element of mystery and intrigue. The green accents on JT’s FootJoy Premiere Series took this to the next level.

Tiger Woods (Sun Day Red)

I was much more impressed with Sun Day Red at the Masters than I was with the initial release. I’m glad they removed the logo from the bottom of the placket. It looks cleaner and less cumbersome. Overall, Tiger looked great! Mauve is a terrific color choice for the Big Cat.

Fashion Crimes

Sergio Garcia

Rumor has it that Sergio was paying tribute to his favorite holiday character, Buddy the Elf.

Viktor Hovland

In “Dimes” we saw examples of good botanical prints. Consider this the opposite. As a kid, I spent seven years in Brooklyn, NY during the late seventies and early eighties. Viktor’s shirt reminds me of a print that my parent’s friends, the Lombardi’s, had above their couch during this time period.

Jason Day

Call me a curmudgeon if you want, but these were awful. And with the high winds we saw late on Thursday, they were borderline dangerous to wear. Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em.

Tyrrell Hatton

Methinks the inspiration for this shirt was the 1999 Ryder Cup in Brookline. Awful.

LIV Logos

Finally, I found the LIV minor-league-baseball-style logos to look downright ridiculous at Augusta National.

  1. Willett’s fits were all Lindeberg (up top anyway), so imagine that hell be getting his pick of everything TG has to offer

  2. Liv logos do look ridiculous at the masters . Wyndham Clark is becoming a bit of a sleeper style god with those fits . I hope JT makes the cut so I can see what he is wearing the weekend.
