Billy Horschel Interview Feature

This Week In Golf Fashion: The Great Gatsby Edition

Horschel’s winning fashion moves, Lanto’s pleats (or not), van Rooyen goes wild, and has P-Reed inked a new apparel deal? Jump in your 1922 Silver Ghost. Tour Editor Michael Ruuska recaps the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Great Gatsby style.

Recently I found myself in a conversation about the most stylish men in American literature (the final bracket came down to Jay Gatsby vs. Rhett Butler). Any guesses who came out on top, old sport? Gatsby, indeed! Gatsby was a self-made man who implicitly understood style and transformed himself into a rakish gentleman. Much like my fictional style bracket, Billy Horschel found himself the last man standing at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. Congratulations, Billy! From a fashion standpoint, Billy Horschel is the Jay Gatsby of the PGA Tour.

He Wears Pink

An Oxford man! Like hell he is! He wears a pink suit!

Tom Buchanan — The Great Gatsby

Gatsby’s pink suit symbolized him as an outsider among the old-money upper class. At Austin Country Club this past weekend, you were more of an outsider if you weren’t wearing shades of pink…..

No doubt that Ian Poulter would’ve received an incredulous roll-of-the-eyes from Tom Buchanan if he showed up wearing this pastel kit at East Egg CC. West Egg CC? Now that’s a different story.

No doubt, Kevin Streelman’s simple floral print johnnie-O Takuya Pique Polo plays at both East and West Egg Country Club.

This Pink Foam Dri-FIT Vapor Polo is one of my favorites from Nike so far this season.

The Great Gatsby took place in Long Island, New York. Fairway & Greene is headquartered in NYC and their entire Performance Polo line is made in New York as well; including this USA Mini Rep Stripe Jersey Polo.

I do love the repeating logo detail on the collar of this adidas EQT Zipper Pique Polo.

Despite Gatsby’s all-consuming passion for Daisy, it is debatable whether she is a “perfect fit” for him or if she represents his desire to possess something unattainable. You know what is a “perfect fit“? The Medium/Large size that Stitch Golf offers for their polos. Seriously, it was a game-changer for me. When they offered to send me some samples I had to explain that I am between a medium and a large and to use their best judgment. They must’ve chuckled at that one because little did I know they offer M/L as a size option. Perfect, old sport.

F.Scott Fitzgerald masterfully weaves flower imagery throughout The Great Gatsby. He uses flowers to represent many of the characters in his novel (Daisy Buchanan, Myrtle Wilson, and Nick Caraway) but mainly they are symbolic of the idea that aesthetic beauty can only temporarily hide our internal ugliness. If you are looking to hide your “ugliness” with a beautiful flower, William Murray Golf’s Mums the Word Polo might do the trick.

Jon Rahm (TravisMathew & Cuater)

We finally saw Jon Rahm lace up Cuater shoes in competition. The white leather version of The Wildcard is slated to drop on April 12. Last year I wrote that the Heater polo was one of my favorite shirts for those hot and humid days. Apparently, Jon Rahm agrees. I am hearing that this has become his favorite TM top.

We saw apparel free agent (?) Patrick Reed alternate between G/FORE and this Galvin Green Mitchell Polo during Match Play but I am hearing he just signed with Castore.

Wild Thing (Polo) you make my heart sing.

Social media couldn’t agree if these Galvin Green Nigel Pants have a single pleat or a front seam/crease. According to Galvin Green they are pleated and fitted down the leg. (We’ll let you be the judge!) Either way, I bet Jay Gatsby would appreciate this fresh and modern look.

Danny Willett (Descente & Nike)

….meanwhile down in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. I can’t wait to see Danny Willett’s scripting for The Masters. This shirt is amazing!
