Open Championship Fashion Dimes & Crimes: Days 3 & 4

Tartans, windowpanes, and joggers. Oh my! Trousers continued to dominate the style conversation at The Open Championship. See what caught our eyes at Royal Portrush as Tour Editor Michael Ruuska breaks down the best and worst looks from the weekend.

Fashion Dimes

Joggers were the most-talked about pants the past few days. However, JT’s Ralph Lauren Tartan trousers were the best in show, in my opinion. His RLX Thermal Fleece Pullover on Saturday wasn’t too shabby either.

Greg waxed poetic about van Rooyen’s joggers, and rightfully so! What about EVR’s Greyson sweaters over the weekend? I don’t want to wish away summer but I cannot wait until the Autumn golf collections roll out!

Also, I have always been surprised more PGA Tour Pros don’t wear Ecco. They are such a great golf shoe and Erik van Rooyen wore them well with his joggers.

Danny Willett (Descente)

Danny deservedly gets another Dime. Versions of light blue were hot at Royal Portrush and Danny might’ve worn it best. Bonus points for the long-sleeve polo. His sweater on Sunday really caught my eye; the ribbed detailing made me think of a modern-day Irish Fisherman’s sweater.

Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm both wore this Adidas crew-neck sweater over the weekend to combat the Northern Ireland elements. I think I will be following their lead.

Sang Hyun Park

I do not know much about Sang Hyun Park but I do know that he looked fantastic in this classically styled get-up on Saturday. I love the subtle windowpane design on his trousers. Pairing them with a pair of saddle shoes and Merino wool crew-neck sweater was a winning look in my book.

Rickie Fowler (Puma)

Rickie Fowler’s new hirsute look is slowly growing on me. Whereas, the Puma X Collection had me at “Hello.” The Donluce Golf 1/4 Zip is every bit as luxurious as his hair is “Joe Dirt.” A very interesting juxtaposition that only Rickie could pull off.

Henrik Stenson (Hugo Boss)

I would be jumping for joy too if I could get my hands on that Hugo Boss 1/4 zip sweater. I don’t know if I like the outfit better with or without the pullover. The contrasting shoulder stripe on the polo is pretty sweet too.

Fashion Crimes

Poor Patrick Reed. He always seems to miss the mark.

Brooks Koepka

I did not like the white mock neck base-layer under the yellow shirt. The sleeves on the polo also seemed a bit too long. Brooks should be a Dime every time. His style was underwhelming at the Open Championship.

Bubba needs to move on from his oversized, shapeless, geometric-patterned shirts.

My day job is that of a public educator. Therefore, I cannot help but bring my pedagogy to GolfThreads. The lesson today (and every day really), is to never wear a white belt with dark colors. This ruined what would’ve otherwise been a righteous J.Lindeberg kit.

  1. Those EVR sweaters are incredible but loved Danny willett this week the most. Henriks body type makes him look good in anything. Golf threads should do a body type article. Whats best to wear if tall thin, wider, more muscular, shorter, etc.
