Masters Fashion Dimes & Crimes: Day 1

Ludvig turns heads in the Trefoil, Day slays in Malbon and Payntr, BillyHo’s preppy pink and navy, Sergio works the drive-thru, and more.

Tour Editor Michael Ruuska breaks down the best and worst fits from Day 1 at Augusta.

Fashion Dimes

Adam Scott (Uniqlo & FootJoy)

One of my favorite movie characters of all time is Doc Brown from Back to the Future. His catchphrase was, “Great Scott!” Most people don’t know (or care) that the phrase was originally a reference to Winfield Scott, a top general in the U.S. Army in the 1800s. Scott was revered for his military exploits, and was also quite large and imposing, making him literally a “Great Scott.” Adam Scott has long been revered for his sartorial skills. He’s always been ahead of the curve. Take a good look at the sleeves on his polo. He is giving you a glimpse into the future of golf fashion.

Dustin Johnson (extracurricular & adidas Golf)

I am ignoring the stupid LIV 4Aces GC logo (insert eye roll emoji). It made me irrationally happy to see Dustin Johnson back on the pages of GolfThreads. I’ve been waiting for someone on Tour to do monochromatic as well as DJ (I am still waiting). If there were a Hall of Fame of Walking, Johnson would be right behind Vinnie Barbarino. He doesn’t walk as much as he glides…

Min Woo Lee (Lululemon & FootJoy)

Maybe not the same kind of swagger as DJ but Lee has some bravado. He’s the modern-day swashbuckling golfer. He looks good too! He and Lululemon are the perfect partnership. And how about his personalized FootJoy’s?!

Colin Morikawa (adidas Golf)

This modern geometric engineered design really caught my eye. From afar it appeared to be a camouflage/floral print. Colin looks great in navy. This fit works.

Billy Horschel (Ralph Lauren & FootJoy)

Billy is the best in the biz. The pink and blue on the soles of his FootJoy shoes is awesome. Just awesome.

Jason Day (Malbon & Payntr)

First off, those shoes? Yowza! The shirt? Dynamite! Augusta National can’t complain about this look from Jason. Day slayed.

Will Zalatoris (FootJoy)

YOU can wear this. CLEAN. SIMPLE. AWESOME. I was surprised by how many guys I saw strolling the fairways at ANGC with pants that were too long. Follow Will’s lead and wear properly tailored slacks. It instantly elevates your look; making you appear taller and slimmer. Win-win, right?

Harris English (Onward Reserve & FootJoy)

The color of these pants is Dark Forest. If you don’t have a similar colorway in your closet, consider picking up a pair. These are hot. They look great with the blue V-neck sweater. Bravo, Harris.

Joaquin Niemann (Stuburt & adidas Golf)

This dynamic camo print really captures Joaquin’s energy, flexibility, and athleticism. I miss Niemann as much for his game as his style.

Ludvig Aberg (adidas Originals Golf)

As a Finn, it pains me to root for a Swede. But what’s not to like about this kid? He looks like he was built in a golf lab. He’s got the most effortless power I’ve ever seen. And now he’s wearing THE collection of the year. Aberg is transcending golf and looks great doing it.

Fashion Nickles

Rory McIlroy

Backstory to Rory’s Thursday scripting: he and Nike felt that the pine straw at Augusta doesn’t get enough credit, so they designed this outfit to pay homage. Kidding. But given what Nike has done in the past, I wouldn’t put it past them.

Justin Thomas

I am not sure what it is. Maybe the bar was set so high for JT. Maybe it is the shoe switcheroo. Can’t quite put my finger on it but something is slightly off with Justin Thomas’ normally impeccable style.

Fashion Crimes

Sergio Garcia

I am getting Ronald McDonald vibes here. Terrible.

Bernhard Langer

Bernhard Langer recreated his outfit from his 1985 Masters win. It was quite possibly the worst winning ‘fit of all time. Reminds me of the red Power Ranger.

Scott Vail

Too much wolf, Scott! August National might need to get John O’Donnell to bring his signature “Tweener Button” to the caddie jumpsuits because this is borderline inappropriate.

  1. With JT it’s the shoes, they are the wrong style for the rest of his outfits. Billy ho killing it & you are spot on about Aberg. The new adidas collection is the best I’ve seen in ages, bravo. Great to see the daily reports back, cheers.
