The Open Championship Fashion Dimes & Crimes: Day 1

BillyHo’s trendy throwback fit, Max drops the needle while dropping a dime, seeing enough of Si Woo’s sweaters, and more. Tour Editor Michael Ruuska breaks down the best and worst looks from Day 1 at The Open Championship.

Fashion Dimes

Thorbjorn Olesen (Galvin Green & FootJoy)

Galvin Green has some of the best technical layers in golf. Thorbjorn proves that they look good, too.

Wyndham Clark (Municipal & FootJoy)

U.S. Open Champion Wyndham Clark looks like a winner in this simple crewneck sweater. The FootJoy x Harris Tweed Premiere Series Field Hoylake Shoes are a true embodiment of modern elegance.

Gary Woodland (Puma Golf)

I love a thoughtful collaboration, and the PUMA Golf x Liberty of London collection is all of that and more. It beautifully merges golf, art, and fashion and gracefully captures the spirit of the host city, Liverpool.

Adam Scott (Uniqlo & FootJoy)

Making a guest appearance in the Dimes section, none other than Adam Scott, ladies and gentlemen! I will most certainly be adding this sweater to my fall wardrobe.

Max Homa (FootJoy)

This FJ Drop Needle Half-Zip sweater has an eighties feel to it that I am really into. Bonus points for the fun socks, Max.

Thomas Detry (Hugo Boss & G/FORE)

Apparently drop needle fabric is hot! Detry looks like a boss in this polo. The stripe detailing on the collar with the green G/FORE glove gives an added flair.

Jordan Smith (Galvin Green & FootJoy)

The all-over graphic wave print on Jordan Smith’s Galvin Green polo is inspired by the scenic coastal views of the world’s beautiful seaside golf courses. I’d say the local bloke made a fine choice by selecting this top to kick things off at Royal Liverpool Golf Club.

Justin Thomas (Greyson Clothiers & FootJoy)

The polo, the vest, and THIS sweater, oh my. Greyson killed it with JT’s scripting on Thursday. Sadly, we didn’t get to see much of the Loch Ness Toile Polo which is inspired by a traditional tartan plaid pattern. This storied polo features a detailed toile that depicts scenes from the Scottish Highlands.

Billy Horschel (Ralph Lauren Golf & FootJoy)

The TrendyGolf x Ralph Lauren Cotton Blend Short Sleeve Pullover made me stand up from my seat. It was like going back in time. The tipped Johnny collar adds modern sophistication to this classic look. BillyHo owned this kit as only BillyHo could. Bravo, old sport.

Fashion Crimes

Si Woo Kim

I’ve had about enough of these block print PGA TOUR sweaters…

John Daly

If I had to say something positive about John Daly’s outfit, I guess it would be…at least he isn’t wearing the Hooters pants…

Danny Willett

Well, here is something that has most certainly never happened before, Danny Willett in the Crimes section. I call a flagrant foul for choosing to wear a t-shirt under his polo. That makes me irrationally angry, Danny.

Hideki Matsuyama

Well, here is something that is NOT a surprise, Hideki collects another Crime. There are a lot of geometric shapes and patterns going on here. I would’ve looked the other way if he just layered a plain black sweater vest over his camo print shirt. Oh, Hideki…

  1. I don’t mind the under polo t shirt as long as it matches but I was disappointed with Billy ho’s look. Felt washed out.
