Spring Favorite: Devereux Prescott Pant

Hey, guys. Put down the snow shovels and throw another log on the fire. It may not seem like it, but it is time to think about your spring golf wardrobe. Unless your golf season is kicking off in a tropical locale, you’ll likely tee it up for the first time in a pair of pants, rather than shorts. That being said Devereux’s Prescott Pant should be on your short list this spring.

Robert Brunner, Devereux’s creative director, gave me a peek at the Prescott during the 2014 PGA Merchandise Show. If he had let me, I would have bought a pair right then and there. Unfortunately, I had to wait until Devereux’s 2014 Fall Collection hit retail, and when it did, I didn’t hesitate to order a pair in the claret color. I wore them at this year’s PGA Merchandise Show and people kept stopping me to ask about them. Since then, I’ve picked up another couple of pairs in the steel and charcoal colors for spring.

The Prescott Pant offers a very clean and sleek look with a fit that will appeal to a wide range of players. Although Devereux refers to the Prescott as a narrow fit pant, I find the fit to be more generous than what you may think. Sure, the words ’slim’ and ’narrow’ make some guys cringe with thoughts of wardrobe malfunctions when crouching to read a putt, but the Prescott offers a contemporary fit with ample room through the hips and upper thighs. In other words, you have the freedom to rip some drives without worrying about ripping your seams.

What I like most about the fit of the Prescott is the slight taper that it offers through the knee and lower leg. The days of straight leg and bootcut pants are over. If you aren’t wearing a pant with a slight taper, now is the time to get on trend and the Prescott is the perfect place to start.

An important aspect of the fit is also how you tailor the Prescott. With a narrow leg opening, the Prescott begs to be tailored with a short break so that the hem brushes the tops of your shoes. I find that the combination of the narrow leg opening and a full break leads to material bunching around the ankles. With the shorter break, you will be showing some ankle when you are reading a putt, so I recommend strengthening your sock game by slipping on a pair of cool socks from G/FORE or Stance.

The lightweight knit fabric on the Prescott contributes to its clean lines. Made from a polyester/spandex blend, the Prescott easily moves with you and offers just the right amount of stretch. The fabric is also light and airy, making it a perfect option for warm playing conditions.

Naturally, when I think about the Devereux brand, the first thing that pops into my mind is the wavy, angled design of the flap on the chest pocket of its polos. Not only does this design put an interesting spin on the typical square and boring pocket, but also it has become one of the distinguishing branding elements on Devereux’s shirts. On the Prescott, Robert Brunner has carried over this same design to the rear pockets flaps, which takes an already stylish pant to the next level and creates some continuity between the shirts and pants in the collection.

The Prescott features other well-appointed details, too, that you won’t find on other golf pants. The branded ribbon on the inner waistband adds a high fashion touch, the angled front pockets allow tees and ball markers to be easily stored and removed, and the double-button closure offers a secure fit.

The Prescott is part of Devereux’s new Spring 2014 Christina O Collection that hit shelves in select pro shops and online in mid-February. It is available in three colors — steel (light grey), charcoal (dark grey) and claret. The steel is a highly versatile option for the season, as it will pair well with many of the brightly colored polos we will see this spring.

The Christina O Collection builds on the success of Devereux’s debut collections in 2014. Fittingly named after Aristotle O’Nassiss’ yacht, the collection was inspired by Greek architecture and the tranquil waves of the Mediterranean and Agean seas. The color story, highly influenced by nautical colors, pairs pebble blues, sage greens, and sand-colored apricots with each other to create a relaxing and comfortable look.
