The Open Championship Fashion Dimes & Crimes: Day 2

The weather was dreary, the leaderboard was jammed, and the fashion? Mostly forgettable. But tucked in between the rain showers and windbreakers were a few certified dimes—and a couple crimes we couldn’t ignore. Greg breaks down the best and worst looks from Friday at Royal Portrush.

Collin might not be a loud dresser, but when he hits, he hits. This seafoam Adidas pullover was a standout—equal parts nostalgia and innovation. The color feels lifted straight from a ‘90s windbreaker (in the best way), and the digital camo print adds just enough texture to keep things fresh. Adidas loves to use the Open as a runway for new layering pieces, and this one felt perfectly coastal without trying too hard.

Jason Day is golf’s ultimate style chameleon. One day it’s streetwear, the next it’s sleek and sporty. His round-two look was a masterclass in elegant minimalism: long-sleeve polo, stone trousers, clean lines. But when the rain rolled in, so did the rainsuit—yes, that bold plaid Malbon number that everyone’s been buzzing about. It’s giving classic tartan meets snowboarding outerwear, and honestly, we’re here for the chaos.

Yesterday, I talked about Rory being in the top-tier of the power rankings for sweater wearers. Well, you can add Justin Thomas’ name to that list, too. Whether it’s a cardigan or crew, he always finds ways to inject color and personality into his layers. This is how you make a statement without shouting.

Viktor Hovland (J.Lindeberg)

One of my lasting fashion memories from this Open will be this blue color from J.Lindeberg. The brand understands that sometimes it’s not what you wear but how you shade it. Viktor’s pairing of oatmeal with powder blue stood out as one of the coolest combos of the day. A white pullover would’ve been the easy choice, but the oatmeal color was refined, trendy, and right now.

We need more retro-inspired extended plackets on tour. Full stop. But let’s talk about the necklace. I’m just not sure about the necklace being worn outside the collar like a bolo tie.

Shugo Imahira (and per se)

Leave it to Japan to serve bold, fearless golf fashion that makes U.S. styles look timid by comparison. This sweater from and per se hits that sweet spot between sporty and avant-garde. It’s giving Tokyo streetwear meets country club rebellion vibes and I’m here for it.

Joaquin Niemann (Stuburt & Adidas Golf)

Yesterday I talked about how Jaco is understands color coordination like few others, including the three aqua stripes of his Adidas kicks the sync perfectly with his LIV uniform. But here’s the real story: his wife designed the artwork and hand-painted those shoes. That’s love. That’s art. That’s next-level personalization.

Tom McKibbin (Greyson Clothiers & Adidas)

I’m often asked if white shoes can worn with black pants and the answer is a definite yes. But here’s the secret sauce—balance it with a white lid if your top half is dark. Tom nailed the formula. It’s not just about matching; it’s about framing the fit.

Fashion Nickel

Tommy Fleetwood (Nike)

Not quite a dime, but worth the redemption arc. Why am I so opposed to the polo-over-a-baselayer? Look how much better Fleetwood looked in the crewneck layering piece today (top) versus yesterday. I rest my case.

Fashion Crimes

Robert MacIntyre

Bobby Mac is consistently one of the worst dressed players in the game. There are so many lessons to be learned from this fit, but let’s just focus on the belt. The patterned strap is an easy way to add interest to a solid shirt/solid pant combo. However, when paired with another patterned piece, it becomes too busy.

This hat. Where do we even start? Digital camo plus oversized block lettering? It’s frat-boy-core meets clearance rack. Nothing about this says “tour player.” Everything says “swing hard in the sim on Tuesdays.”
