The Open Championship Fashion Dimes & Crimes: Day 1

JT wakes up The Open fashion scene, FJ and Harris Tweed weave another winning collab, DJ makes it rain in short sleeves, and more. Tour Editor Michael Ruuska breaks down the best and worst looks from Thursday at Royal Troon.

I was yawning this morning too, JT. Except I was in my pajamas while you were decked out in this killer kit.

The LE FootJoy x Harris Tweed Premiere Series is such a thoughtful and elegant collaboration. Each year seems to be better than the last. This one boasts a distinctive hand-woven tweed with a ‘basket weave’ pattern, reminiscent of a postage stamp, paying homage to the iconic 8th hole at this year’s Open Championship.

Tom Hoge (Flag & Anthem & FootJoy)

I set my alarm to an ungodly hour to catch The 152nd Open Championship and as a result, drank an entire pot of java. Tom Hoge had me buzzing (literally) when I saw him in his Kjus Inverness Midlayer Half-Zip. This sweater incorporates Kjus’ Eco-Coffee Technology. It is a cashmere-blend fabric infused with recycled coffee grounds! Apparently, Tom’s sweater was as caffeinated as I was…

The RLX Golf Performance Cotton-Blend Cardigan was a smart choice for Royal Troon. Classic.

Billy Horschel (Ralph Lauren & FootJoy)

However, if you prefer something more modern you can follow Billy Horschel’s and opt for a performance vest. Hint: copying Billy-Ho’s style is always a good move.

Dustin Johnson (Extracurricular & FootJoy)

Last week Greg said he has always had a “love/hate relationship with short-sleeved jackets.” I tend towards the hate department from a style standpoint. Dustin Johnson and the Kjus Dexter II 2.5L Troyer rain jacket may be the exception. Anytime I see people wearing short-sleeved jackets on the course they look oversized and awkward. DJ wears his like a shirt! I want the name of his tailor. This guy’s fits are always dialed in.

Puma nailed it with their LE Fair Isle Phantomcat Nitro Wingtip Golf Shoes. The “Fair Isle” Capsule Collection is named after a traditional knitting technique and color palette from the Shetland Islands in Scotland.

Min Woo Lee (Lululemon & FootJoy)

A charcoal half-zip with a pop of color underneath and black trousers? Yeah, that works.

Rikuya Hoshino (Srixon & G/FORE)

So, you mean to tell me that Rikuya Hoshino and Hideki Matsuyama both wear Srixon apparel?! I will have what Rikuya is having.

Tyrrell Hatton (TravisMathew & adidas Golf)

This TravisMathew Cloud Quarter-Zip in Heather Dark Red is a great color on Tyrrell Hatton.

Robert really likes this grey base layer, eh? Me? Not so much.

  1. Some great fits on here but compare billy hos outfit to the similar one worn by zj. Totally ruined by those stupid outsized logos.
