This Week In Golf Fashion: The Players Championship

Coming at you from the EAST COAST, yo! Proper, polarizing, and perplexing; we’ve got it all. Including Scottie’s “hot” pants, Billy’s transcendent Traditions, and EVR’s brilliant juxtaposition. Sit back, relax, and enjoy all the golf fashion news from THE PLAYERS Championship. Now THAT was fun!

What did the bottle of oil say to the frying pan? “You’re sizzling hot!” (Sorry). What does that “dad joke” have to do with Scottie Scheffler? Well, HE is sizzling hot and the colorway of the chinos he wore on Sunday is Oil Green (and they were also hot). The matching belt made the outfit. Good call, Scottie.

Wyndham Clark (Municipal & FootJoy)

Wyndham Clark is quickly cementing his reputation as one of the best-dressed guys on Tour (he is a pretty good golfer, too). Thursday was especially strong. Blue and black aren’t as easy as you’d think to mix and match. Clark nailed it, proper like.

Sadly, every week I see guys in ill-fitting pants. It’s a tragedy, really. And easily rectified. Get a tailor and make things right. I am pretty sure that these are Greyson trousers which makes this even more perplexing.

Cantlay, take note; this is how you do it. Have you ever seen Maverick McNealy in ill-filling apparel? I think not. In fact, he doesn’t get enough credit for how dialed in he is week after week. Maverick has sneaky good style, too (the pop of color on the soles of his UA Drive Pro Golf Shoes matches his polo perfectly).

In addition to their amazing shoes, TRUE is producing exceptional apparel. True to its roots, TRUE apparel has a minimalist design and simple aesthetic that is not short on style. Case in point, the LUX Polo in Chambers Camo.

We loved this RLX polo paired with the black slacks. But these custom FJ Traditions take it to another level.

The argyle print on this FootJoy polo stopped me in my tracks when I first saw it. It is a beautifully modern take on a classic design. I want one! However, the real story here is the FJ by Jon Buscemi LE collab. No doubt these will be in the running for the hottest and most sought-after golf shoe of the season.

The brooding design of the Dolphin Island Polo is offset by its cheerful pink color. A brilliant juxtaposition, indeed.

Viktor Hovland (J.Lindeberg & Puma Golf)

Another zippered placket! I struggle with this look. What are your thoughts on this emerging trend?

Keith Mitchell (Sid Mashburn & FootJoy)

I have run out of superlatives.

Jason Day (Malbon Golf & PAYNTR Golf)

Jason Day’s threads are very polarizing. Not since LIV vs. PGA Tour have I heard so many strong opinions from professional golf fans. Admittedly, it is not my style, but I respect what he is doing and think it is good for the game. My biggest issue is how PAYNTR and Malbon will mesh. I am skeptical, to say the least.

Malbon might not be my style, but johnnie-O certainly is. Most days you will find me wearing “West Coast prep”. Their easygoing casual style is versatile enough for me to wear in my role as a father, boyfriend, school counselor, and evolving golfer. Wherever these responsibilities take me, johnnie-O is usually tagging along.

A very special thank you to my friends at johnnie-O for awakening me from my “golf hibernation with some new gear. In addition to clothes for me, they sent samples of their new women’s collection for Carolyn. The highlight was the Coastal Cashmere Blend “East Coast” Crewneck Sweater (for those of you closer to the Pacific they offer a West Coast edition too). This luxuriously soft sweater is the ultimate statement piece that can be worn year-round. Other items in the inaugural collection include transitional dresses, on-trend matching sets, and comfortable everyday essentials that are designed to seamlessly transition your wardrobe from winter to spring. Guys, Mother’s Day will be here before you know it and this capsule collection is selling out fast.

  1. I like the zipper placket sometime. I like it on the Descente shirts, but not so much on this J. Lindeberg. It looks too busy on the J. Lindeberg but creates interest on the Descente.

    1. Hi Lynne! Thanks for reading. I am struggling with the zipper placket but agree with you that Descente > JL but IMO, Michael Kors was the best of the ones I have seen lately. Have a great week!
