Fashion Dimes
Max Homa (FootJoy)
The only thing better than Max Homa’s game over the first two days has been his FJ fits. Growing up on the East Coast, the Masters always symbolized the unofficial start of spring and the golf season for me. If you’re dusting off your clubs for the first time in a few months, a pair of light blue trousers is a good way to take your game out of hibernation. Pro tip: grab a white shirt and grey belt, like Max, so the pants are the focal point of your fit.
Bryson DeChambeau (Stitch Golf & FootJoy)
In his amateur days, Bryson seemed to favor more traditional looks, which is why his relationship with Puma always seemed like an odd one to me. Now he seems to have found his style home with Stitch. His clothes fit much better thanks to the longer, wider sleeves and the more generous cut in the chest and shoulders. Plus, the smaller, tighter print on Stitch’s Monza Polo brought an air of sophistication that we haven’t seen from Bryson in the past. It is also a tip of the cap to the iconic Monza racetrack, which plays to Stitch’s vintage motorsports roots and Bryson’s need for speed.
Dustin Johnson (Extracurricular & FootJoy)
Whenever I see DJ strolling Augusta’s fairways, that 2008 song “Swagger Like Us” pops into my head because this guy’s swagger is on a hundred thousand trillion. I’ve often labeled Dustin as the King of Monochromatic Fits. We’ve seen him rip off all navy blue, black, and grey looks with ease, but rolling out in green-on-green is next level. Don’t try this at home, kids. One false move and you’ll look like the Jolly Green Giant. Yeah, DJ’s flow is colder than February with extraordinary swag.
Ryo Hisatsune (TaylorMade)
Speaking of swagger, this guy can flat-out cook in those Oakley Sutro shades and TaylorMade threads. The Sutros are the statement sunglasses of the year.
Tiger Woods (Sun Day Red)
Fashion aside, what Tiger Woods is doing is friggin’ amazing. He just made his 24th straight cut at the Masters with a body that is held together with bubble gum and duck tape. Plus, he’s had hardly any competitive reps in the last year. Hopefully, that bubble gum and duck tape hold up through the weekend.
It also appears the Big Cat is having a fashion renaissance in his late forties. I had mixed feelings about Sun Day Red after that initial launch, but I’m becoming more of a fan every day. So what is the difference between Tiger in Nike and Tiger in Sun Day Red?
First, much like Bryson, his clothes just fit better. The tailoring of his shirts is on point. There’s more width in the chest and more taper through the body. The sleeves are longer and wider, too. Second, his polos have texture. For example, the pique fabric on Thursday’s polo and the knit cut-away collar on Friday’s polo offered more texture compared to the flat jersey materials he wore in the past. Third, the sweaters are insane and the tailoring is on point. I always thought Tiger’s best style era was during his amateur days, but late-career Tiger might give young Tiger a run for his money.
Erik van Rooyen (Greyson Clothiers & ECCO)
Greyson’s latest collection may have been inspired by Savannah, Georgia but it is making strong statements in Augusta. The Marsh Green Montauk Trousers pair nicely with the Sunrise Pink tones of the polo. Also, have you noticed EVR moved away from his signature joggers this week? That being said, I like the length of his pants.
Thorbjorn Olesen (Greyson Clothiers & FootJoy)
The Marsh Green color from Greyson is more versatile than you may think. Thorbjorn Olesen gave us a different look by pairing it with navy blue.
Jake Knapp (Original Penguin & Nike)
If it works, run it back. Michael dropped a dime on Jake Knapp for layering up with OP’s Earl Merino Wool Sweater Polo on Thursday. Jake stuck with it again for another dime-worthy look on Friday. You know a guy has style game when he can layer a polo over a polo.
Stephan Jaeger (Criquet & FootJoy)
’90s retro is having a moment but I’ll take throwback looks from the Golden Era any day. The stiff collar, long four-button placket, and chest pocket on this Criquet Polo never go out of style.
Jason Day (Malbon Golf & Payntr)
Let’s all take a deep breath. I saw a lot of people in the golf social media community getting triggered over Jason Day’s Thursday fit and the reaction to it. There is a growing chasm between those in the #MoreFabric movement and those who are not. Much like with Sun Day Red, I’ve tried to be fair and balanced in my takes on Malbon and Day. Yes, golf needs to leave the slim-fit era. At the same time, Day’s pants on Thursday were comically baggy. Granted the high winds didn’t do him any favors.
Friday’s fit was more of what I want to see from Day and it started with the hooded anorak at the crack of dawn. I’m plus/minus on ’90s retro fashion, but the anorak is definitely in the plus column for me. I remember rockin’ a Nike Flight anorak with fuchsia, teal, and orange colorblocking in the early ’90s. J-Day’s all-black anorak was more subdued but hit all the right notes.
Day’s trouser choice was much better on Friday, too. The straight-leg chino that swept the tops of his shoes was an easier sell than the parachute pants on Thursday. Sometimes evolution is a better approach than revolution. Not all was good for Jason, though…
Fashion Crimes
Jason Day
Jason Day has pulled off the rare Dimes & Crimes double by grabbing both in a single day. I’m going to need an explanation on this sweater vest. @golfkhakis, who I respect a lot, gave it an 85 of out 100. I saw others elevating it to grail status. Seriously, if you like this vest, explain to me why. I’m here for it. And I need something more than, “It’s Malbon, so it’s cool.” I want to know the cultural/fashion significance of it. Besides, teeing it up in something that says, “Malbon Golf Championship” at was is arguably the most prestigious golf tournament feels a bit tone deaf to me.
On the flip side, the sunglasses are dime-worthy. I’m all for players ditching the traditional wrap-arounds for a pair of shades that is more fashionable.
