WGC Mexico Championship Fashion Recap
As the 2018 season begins to heat up, the world’s best headed south of the border to Mexico City. The condensed field this week enabled Ian Galbraith to take a different look at the best styles on the course.
Day 1
The theme of Day 1 was the effectiveness of simple, solid shirts and pants. Follow the lead of these golfers and just go with a basic polo instead of a crazy pattern the next time you tee it up.
Rafa Cabrera Bello (FootJoy)
Rafa could wear a worn out paper bag and still make the best-dressed list. Since his transition to Footjoy apparel this year, his style game has gone to the next level. The simple green and blue shirt looked great with the white pants and green hat. I wonder if he has to wear the FJ billboard on his belt buckle as part of his contract.
Dustin Johnson (Adidas Golf)
Dustin is the king of solids and subtle stripes and on Thursday he nailed this rather basic look. White can be a difficult color for some of us to pull off, especially yours truly. The main takeaway from DJ’s outfit? A perfect fit and on point tailoring elevates even the most basic looks.
Day 2
Our focus for Day 2 shifted to players who typically fly under the radar, even for us devoted golf fans. Being a WGC event, the list of viable options was endless and here are a few of our favorite looks from Friday.
Yuta Ikeda
The 48th ranked player in the world plays most of his golf in Asia, but we want to see him add a few more PGA Tour starts to his calendar. The white and black polka dot shirt was eye-catching and bright red leather belt pulled the entire look together. A complementary belt like this one is an easy way to add a splash of color to any outfit.
Yusaku Miyazato (Lyle & Scott)
Yusaku is famous for being the only player in modern PGA Tour history to have two holes in one in the same round. He has a mean style game to go along with a Top 60 OWGR ranking. The blue-on-blue getup was simple and clean and the striped polo brought a pop of energy to this monochromatic kit. The custom FootJoy Shield Tips completed the outfit in style.
Joost Luiten
The Dutch golfer has won six times on the European Tour and is known as one of the sharpest dressers. The best part of Friday’s outfit was the perfect fit of his polo. The red, white, and blue tipping on the sleeves and inside of the shirt placket brought a timeless look to this modern setup.
Day 3
Most players have one round per tournament that goes off the rails–putts lip out, wedges are a yard or two off, or the mental game easily frays. Saturday in Mexico City was one of those days for fashion. Below are some of the duds.
Marc Leishman (Izod)
Some guys can totally rock wide colorful stripes; others can’t. The Australian falls into the latter. This bright blue, green, pink, and white striped shirt didn’t work for him on many levels. He should have followed the examples from Friday and kept it simple.
Jordan Spieth (Under Armour)
Mr. Spieth’s fashion game has taken a big step forward in 2018. His clothes are tailored a bit slimmer and most days his shirts complement his belt and pants. Saturday was not one of those days, though. The lime green and pink striped shirt was too bright and led to a washed out look. Not to mention, the white belt cut the entire outfit in half.
Day 4
Sunday was a day of history-making performances. Phil Mickelson was either going to break his longest winning drought of his career or Justin Thomas was going to continue his historical year and a half of golf. It even took an extra hole to decide who would take home the trophy and a cool $1.5 million.
Phil Mickelson
Phil gets a thumbs up for not only winning his first tournament in 4+ years but for looking pretty stylish for a guy in his late 40s. The full black outfit always works well for Lefty, right down to those all black G/FORE Gallivanters with the ‘Jumping Phil’ silhouette.
Justin Thomas (Polo Ralph Lauren)
Justin Thomas is one hot golfer. After a very poor first two rounds he fired a 62 and a 64 over the weekend to almost win again. Mimicking his golf game is challenging, but copying this stylish look is a bit easier. Pairing white pants with a bright solid shirt creates a fresh and crisp look for spring. You can also make this work with shorts as the temperatures rise.
Uhh, What?
Seeing this photo just put a big question mark over my head. Glad to see the fans in Mexico City supporting golf, however, I have no idea what outfits Spieth, DJ, Fowler, and Mickelson are wearing on these cutouts. If anybody has the answer, please share it in the comments section.

Fresh Kicks from Adidas
Adidas introduced two new models of its TOUR360 BOOST shoe-the TOUR360 Knit and the TOUR360 EQT BOA. We told you about the TOUR360 Knit a few weeks ago and it won one of our Style Awards at the PGA Show. The upper is constructed from Adidas’ Primeknit material, which not only looks cool, but it is also highly breathable and flexible. The TOUR360 EQT BOA features the most-advance BOA closure system on the market. It allows for tightening around the midfoot and the entire heel of the shoe for increased stability and a locked in feeling.
Players Excel in Fenix XCell
The WGC Mexico Championship was a bit of a coming out party for Fenix XCell as brand ambassadors Shubhankar Sharma and Kiradech Aphibarnrat received plenty of camera time. The Bangkok-based apparel brand is known for its vibrant colors and patterns.
Those outfits are from a Latin American show with an actor called Chespirito who passed away a while back. The red and yellow outfit was for a character called El Chapulin Colorado who was a bumbling kind of super hero. The other character is El Chavo del Ocho who was a kid that got into all kinds of mischief. Both were played by Chespirito; the Dustin Johnson one was hilarious!!!

I think Spieth is trying out some new colors and because he stuck with such a neutral palette for so long, it looks unusual for him. I like Rafa’s look above but the yellow hat on Sunday was very bold with the rest being navy. He is always trying something different which I applaud. JT’s pants looked like a color between white and khaki. Like an off white or ivory. Maybe it was the TV but they didn’t come through as pure white.

Good insight on Spieth’s experimentation with new colors. I for one have been critical of the fact that he typically sticks with blues and grays. He has been working in some new colors, even going with monochromatic black outfits. I can’t say that any of the new looks have worked particularly well for him, so maybe he should go back to his boring blues and grays.
