12 Insanely Stylish Things from the PGA Show

Three days at the PGA Merchandise Show provided a glimpse at the biggest trends that will be hitting the fairways this year.

What’s the hot color for Fall 2017 you may ask? Well, whether you call them maroon, burgundy, wine, cabernet, merlot, or redwood, these deep red hues will find their way into your golf wardrobe this fall. (See Ping Apparel below.)

What’s the biggest trend this year? Golf apparel brands are bringing performance fabrics with stretch and moisture wicking qualities to sportswear and lifestyle pieces. For once, golf is influencing menswear. (See Greg Norman and Oxford below.)

What’s the one thing you can’t hit the course without? Killer shoes. You have no excuse for not completing your outfit in style this year. From sleek athletic kicks to modern reboots of classic styles, shoes are the biggest fashion play in 2017.

G/FORE Footwear

“Did you see those G/FORE shoes?” That was the number one question at the show.

Whether you favor iconic footwear styles or more modern takes in golf shoes, there is something for everyone in G/FORE’s collection. There are contemporary brogue, cap toe, and oxford designs. There is even a shoe with a removable kiltie. If you don’t know what a kiltie is, just ask your grandfather. He probably has a pair with metal spikes in the back corner of his basement near the leather golf bag, persimmon woods, and balata balls. G/FORE also introduced a new street-style shoe called the Disruptor, and new colorways of Bubba Watson’s high-tops. Picking a favorite is no easy feat, though. Each shoe is more stylish than the next.

Greyson Clothiers

I’m running out of superlatives to describe Greyson. Everything from the aesthetics and ambiance of its booth to its clothing is modern, sophisticated, and luxurious. Not often do I find a collection where I could see myself wearing every single piece in it, but such is the case with Greyson’s Fall 2017 Collection.

The Fall 1 Collection pulls inspiration from Seattle’s emerald landscape. The mix of light and dark teals and blues are balanced against neutral grays. Favorites from 2016, like the Katonah, Saranac, Wolfforest, and Camowolf Polos are reinvigorated with fresh colorways for 2017. New designs, like the color-blacked Dyani and patterned Pistol Pete Polos, bring a new energy to the brand. (The Pistol Pete Polo is an homage to the Oklahoma State University mascot, the alma mater of Greyson brand ambassador Morgan Hoffmann.)

In typical Greyson fashion, the juxtaposition of styles and fabrics give the collections a sartorial depth. Luxurious cashmere full-zip cardigans find themselves paired with edgy camo print technical pants, and performance polos with abstract patterns are matched with classic wool trousers.

I saw a lot of outerwear pieces at the PGA Show, and Greyson’s range is second to none. The dark pullovers, technical vests, hybrid jackets, and rain gear offer sleek and sophisticated layering options for the season.

Greg Norman Modern Heritage Collection

Greg Norman has some of the best performance fabrics in the game. They are so good that the brand couldn’t limit them to the course, so it is rolling out a performance sportswear collection that works as hard as you do. Called ‘Modern Heritage’ this new collection features super clean looks and a contemporary urban aesthetic. The button-ups, 5-pocket trousers, polo shirts, sweaters, and outerwear are perfect for a day at the office or a night on the town. Among my favorites is an insulated vest that layers nicely over a sweater and a water resistant jacket that doubles as a blazer.

G/FORE x Peter Millar Footwear Collaboration

G/FORE lives on the edge and constantly pushes the boundaries of golf fashion. Peter Millar, on the other hand, is as straight laced as they come. So, when I heard that they teamed up for a shoe collab, I had to check it out. On the surface, the two brands may seem like strange bedfellows, but the result of their efforts is nothing short of brilliant. The brogue is flat out sick, the Disruptor trainer is modern and athletic, and the pintuck model brings a fresh silhouette to the course. Plus, all three models are available in colorways that complement Peter Millar’s Fall 2017 Collection.

Ping Golf Autumn/Winter Collection

Ping used to license out its apparel business, but a year ago at the PGA Show it launched its first in-house collection and it hasn’t looked back since. The same passion and innovation that the brand has brought to equipment over the years are now being brought to its apparel business. The tailoring of Ping’s polos is impeccable and for A/W’17 some of the shirts in the collection receive an infusion of Tencel. “What’s Tencel?” you may ask. It is a high performance fabric that feels as soft, or softer, than cotton.

Classic pieces, like the Karsten Polo and Lennox 5-pocket pant, return with an updated palette of deep reds and dark blues. New pullovers and insulated layering pieces are as functional as they are stylish. The Zero Gravity rain gear possesses a sleek look and a feathery weight.

Oxford Performance Sportswear Collection

For years, menswear trends have influenced golf fashion, but the script has been flipped. Technical fabrics are moving from the course to the street and they are being integrated into sportswear pieces. Thanks to its rich golf history, Oxford finds itself in prime position to capitalize on this trend.

The brand’s new Performance Sportswear Collection features technical polos with Dri-Release and CoolMax fabrics, woven shirts that are cool to the touch, sweaters that are fabricated from a blend of natural and performance fabrics, and 4-way stretch pants. Holderness & Bourne Apparel & Bags

Every year at the PGA Show I seem to stumble across a new brand that captures my attention. This year Holderness & Bourne was that brand. Now, “stumble across” may not be the most accurate phrase when talking about H&B. The brand has been on my radar for a couple of years, but I’m embarrassed to say that I never reached out to founders Alex Holderness and John Bourne until I crashed their booth at closing time on Thursday. Alex and John are two down to earth guys who have a passion for classic looks, tailored fits, and luxurious details (In other words, my kind of guys). In addition to H&B’s collection of sharp-looking polos, their range of bags with Italian leather handles is ridiculously stylish.

Royal Albartross Footwear

Yes, someone is still making proper shoes. Royal Albartross’ trainer-style kicks, designed in the U.K. and handmade from luxurious Italian leather, put a modern spin on classic looks. New for 2017 are two fresh styles, one with hidden laces and another with a wide contrasting stripe and a high back. Both are unique and extremely stylish.

For a more timeless vibe, Royal Albartross’ Collectors Range features high-end shoes with top-shelf leather, traditional stacked heels, and water repellant leather soles. It doesn’t get any better than this.

Seamus Golf Headcovers

Visiting the Seamus Golf booth is like going back to the future. There is such a great mix of old school tartan headcovers and edgy new school designs, fabrics, and logo applications. My personal favorites right now are the gray herringbone pattern and urban camo print. The new Sunbrella fabric on the Hawaii-themed headcovers is super cool for summer, too. Who knew that stuff on your deck is perfect for protecting your sticks!

Jones Utility Series Bags

The Original Jones bag is an absolute icon, but the brand’s Utility Series captured my attention at the show. The minimalist design is in line with the clean looks of the Original, but a wealth of pockets, a dual-strap design, and a stand bring modern comfort and performance features to the brand’s line of bags. Also look for a Utility Series collab with Greyson that promises to be nothing short of amazing.

Bonobos Golf Highland Pants

Formerly known as Maide Golf, Bonobos has smartly rebranded its golf line as Bonobos Golf. What hasn’t changed, though, is the brand’s ability to crank out some great fitting pants and super clean looks. The iconic Highland Pant returns for 2017 in three fits–athletic, straight, and slim. Personally, I’m partial to the micro check patterns. They wear like solids and provide a subtle texture.

Bradley Allan Insulated Vest

Bradley Allan has a sharp looking collection for the season that features a new performance knit fabric to go along with its Pima cotton blends. The standout piece for me is an insulated vest that will prove to be one of the most versatile pieces in your wardrobe; it is sporty and technical enough for the course and sophisticated enough for everywhere else.
